Avoiding dehydration and the associated drop in performance is a major challenge for all athletes and sports performers.
As well as replacing the water lost via sweat; electrolytes, in particular sodium must also be replenished. Because athletes sweat a lot, their need for sodium (salt) is far greater than for non-athletes.
Along with fluid and electrolyte replenishment, many sports performers need to top up on fuel in the form of carbohydrate before during and after exercise.
Sports drinks are now widely available in a variety of formats and flavours, and provide an “all in one” package of fuel electrolytes and fluid.
Once the hard work of training and competition is done the most immediate priority for athletes and sportspeople is to start the recovery processes.
A proactive dietary approach to recovery is essential in order to:
- Replace lost fluids
- Replenish electrolytes
- Re-synthesise muscle glycogen (carbohydrate) stores
